An Oscar for an actor is like a Golden Ball for a football player: the highest award, once again confirming talent.
With the football award, the Academy Award figurine has one more thing in common - ambiguous winners and losers. Sometimes the name of the laureate is not in doubt, but sometimes you just want to ask: "Well, what did he deserve it for?"
This issue is especially relevant when you look at the names of actors who have not received a single award in their decades of career, although there are many worthy works in their assets.
Today we’ll talk about a dozen of these, remembering the world-famous and illustrious Hollywood stars who have so far been deprived of an Oscar.
10. Jim Carrey
Those who know the actor exclusively from comedies like “Dumb and Dumber”, “Bruce Almighty” and “Ace Ventura” may be surprised at his presence in the compilation, but he is absolutely deserved here.
In addition to the comedies that glorified him, there are at least a few strong dramatic roles in the asset (take at least Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), which show all its diversity.
Jim Carrey was nominated for the Golden Globe 6 times and won twice, was a BAFTA nominee and a bunch of other awards, but he never even nominated for an Oscar. Is it fair? Definitely not.
9. Robert Downey Jr
Incredibly talented actor, firmly bogged down in the Marvel swamp. Blockbusters, of course, turn out to be a feast for the eyes, and they bring him a lot of money, but real fans know that he is capable of more.
In 1993 and 2009, he was nominated for an Oscar, but both times the award passed by. Since then (after the drama “Judge” with him and Robert Duvall), he starred mainly in superhero, for which the prize was not given to him for sure, but he did not subscribe to anything else.
In 2020, he will try on the image of Dr. Doolittle, but this role will definitely not bring him a reward. Perhaps, after the end of the epic with Thanos, Robert will finally begin to consider other proposals.
8. Keanu Reeves
A universal favorite, the hero of many memes and just a great actor, Keanu Reeves did not even get close to the Oscars. Moreover, he does not even have nominations for the Golden Globe, but this is unlikely to upset him very much.
Having conquered the world with the role of the Chosen One, he forever inscribed his name in millions of hearts, which means much more than some kind of reward.
In recent years, he is mainly engaged in comedies and the John Wick series of action films, so in the near future he is unlikely to appear on the list of nominees or laureates.
7. Ralph Fiennes
Another talented actor who has a whole bunch of nominations and not a single award, not counting the BAFTA and the Tony Theater Award.
He was nominated for an Oscar twice, and another 5 times was a nominee for the Golden Globe. The last award is mentioned for contrast: it is generally accepted to consider it the second most important, therefore it is even more surprising that such gifted actors do not even have it.
6. Harrison Ford
Indiana Jones, the archeologist-adventurer and Han Solo, the smuggler, are familiar to everyone, although Ford has other equally outstanding works.
For example, the role in the thriller "Witness" in 1985, for which he was nominated for an Oscar for the only time in his career.
After that, he never got into the list of applicants, but he has great chances for a statuette: in the coming years he may well be awarded an honorary award for his contribution to the development of cinema.
In 2002, he already received the Golden Globe for these services, after 17 years it’s time to give something more serious.
5. Benedict Cumberbatch
The Briton with an unusual appearance equally successfully proved himself both in the big cinema and on television, where he starred in several popular series.
In addition to the sensational Sherlock, last year's Patrick Melrose deserves attention, in which Cumberbatch once again wiped his nose for all skeptics. H
as for the Oscar, he only once had a chance to get it: in 2015, he was nominated as the best actor for the film The Game of Imitation, based in part on the biography of Alan Turing.
4. Edward Norton
The American actor, who will celebrate his 50th anniversary this year, got into the Oscar contenders three times, and always deservedly with chances to win.
The first time it was in 1997 with the movie "Primeval Lies" (he claimed the statuette for best supporting actor), after another 2 years was "American History X" (here already a nomination for the main role), and in 2015 - " Birdman "again the category" Best Actor in a Supporting Role ".
3. Ed Harris
Hollywood veteran, who has accounted for more than a hundred roles, including those worthy of the main film award.
The first time the actor was nominated in 1996 for a minor role in Apollo 13, the second time - three years later, again for a secondary role in the Truman Show. Just imagine how this movie was “rolled”: they deprived not only Jim Carrey, but Harris, who played an excellent manipulator on the other side of the dome.
After that, he was nominated twice more: with the films “Pollock” and “Clock”, but again left with nothing. Total: 4 nominations and all by.
2. Tim Roth
This Briton became famous thanks to his collaboration with Quentin Tarantino, in whom he played in the films “The Disgusting Eight”, “Pulp Fiction”, “Reservoir Dogs” and “Four Rooms”.
Nevertheless, the only nomination for an Oscar, Roth received for the picture “Rob Roy” by Michael Cayton-Jones.
The actor also showed himself well on TV: if you suddenly did not see the series “Fool Me”, then it was very in vain. This is a kind of Dr. House, only without a drop of medicine, but with an equally interesting storyline.
1. Johnny Depp
Abstracting from the scandalous reputation and the bored image of Jack Sparrow, that is, Captain Jack Sparrow, we can clearly state that as an actor Depp is very talented.
His track record has works worthy of statuettes, but he remained only a nominee three times for the films Sweeney Todd, the demon barber from Fleet Street, Fairyland and, oddly enough, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl ".
