Last 2018 gave us a lot of good films, and some of them went unnoticed despite the large budgets and good cast.
Today we decided to collect 10 paintings that are mandatory for viewing, but we took not only well-known blockbusters, but also a couple of ambiguous tapes, weak collections or criticism of which do not at all indicate poor quality.
10. Avengers: Infinity War
So much has been written about the first part of the battle between the Avengers and Thanos that adding something new is quite difficult. The film is definitely one of the best in the superhero franchise, in terms of the quality of the plot it can be put on a par with the first Iron Man, which is considered exemplary.
The special effects and the level of the “epic” created on the screen are beyond praise. The impression of the film was slightly spoiled by the fresh “Captain Marvel”, which became a frank disappointment, and it is this character who will become one of the key in the final part.
9. Halloween
The film is a direct continuation of the horror of 1978, completely ignoring all the events that have taken place in the sequels shot since then (which were not always successful).
Jamie Lee Curtis, who is already 60 years old, has returned to her role. She plays the aged Laurie Strode, who has been living for 40 years waiting for the day when Michael Myers returns to kill her.
She learned to handle weapons and taught her daughter that, but when the masked maniac still arrives, she is completely unprepared, so she won’t get an easy victory.
Despite some mistakes, the film as a whole turned out to be solid (there is the participation of the creator of the franchise, John Carpenter, who was the producer).
8. Quiet location
Another horror movie that, unlike Halloween, does not apply to any franchise and is completely new. The main idea is a post-apocalyptic world inhabited by blind monsters that focus solely on hearing.
Because of this, surviving people are forced to walk as quietly as possible, since even a polite "thank you" can attract the attention of monsters. The picture was the best in 2018 in its genre, collecting an impressive box office - $ 340 million with a budget of only 17 million.
7. A girl who is stuck in a web
This film was both a sequel and a “soft” restart of the thriller by David Fincher “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”, released in 2011. This time in the director’s chair was Fedé Alvarez, who shot in 2016 the horror film Do Not Breathe, which, with a budget of 9.9 million dollars, raised over 150 million.
Instead of Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig, little-known actors starred in the leading roles, which, although it affected the overall quality of the picture, did not make it bad at all.
6. Fantastic creatures: Crimes of Green de Wald
The continuation of "Fantastic Beasts" turned out worse than the first part, but the point here is not so much in the quality of the whole film, but in the stupidity of the script, because otherwise everything is on top. This is strange when the children in Harry Potter acted more logically and smarter than the adults, experienced obscurantists in the new franchise.
Despite this, you still need to look at the picture: at least in order to then understand the events of the third part, which will be released tentatively at the beginning of 2021. Such a big break due to the fact that Rowling writes scripts along the way, so it will take a long time to wait for the end of the whole story, which will consist of 5 films.
5. Alpha
The film, released in 3D and IMAX, was supposed, according to the creators, to become, if not a box office hit, then at least a confident middle peasant, at the box office failed. With a budget of $ 51 million, less than $ 100 million was raised, but, as often happens, the problem is rather in poor marketing than in the film itself.
The historical drama about the adventures of people who lived 20,000 years ago received almost 80% of positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, so if you like stories about the life of primitive people - be sure to look, spend an hour and a half not in vain.
4. The Sisters Brothers
The comedy western of Jacques Odiar turned out to be exemplary: excellent cast (John C. Riley, Joaquin Phoenix, Jake Gyllenhaal, Rutger Hauer), high-quality black humor, interesting plot.
This picture, which was almost unnoticed at the box office, is considered by most critics to be one of the main masterpieces of 2018, and such epithets are distributed out of the blue. Separately, it is worth noting the acting game of C. Riley: here he gave one of his best roles in his career, although he did not receive awards or nominations for prestigious awards for this.
3. The Incredibles 2
The first part of the animated film in 2004 raised more than $ 600 million and received two Oscars (including the best animated full meter), becoming one of the most successful Pixar projects. It's amazing that the sequel had to wait so long, but it was worth it.
The second part turned out even better than the original, which is not so often. Even before the release of the wide release, the work received praise (or even enthusiastic), so its ultimate success did not surprise anyone. Although it was not possible to take the Oscar this time, but it turned out to please the viewer and make good money: the fees amounted to 1.2 billion.
2. Killer 2
Another sequel, this time - an action movie with Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin 2015. This is not to say that it turned out to be a masterpiece, but fans of the genre should not be missed in any case, since there are not as many good-quality militants removed as we would like.
The main advantage of the film is the measure of adequate plot, devoid of blunders and without excessive pathos.
1. Dog Island
We’ll finish our selection with Wes Anderson’s puppet cartoon, which was undeservedly “rolled” with an Oscar. The award went to Spider-Man, who, by no means, is drawn to the title of best.
The work carried out during the creation of the “Island of Dogs” is a tremendous work, unlike the “spider” drawn on the computer, and the plot here is many times stronger.
The story unfolds in Japan of the future, where due to dog flu, all dogs were placed on a quarantine island. There comes the boy Atari, who is looking for his fourth friend. It is an adult story that will be understood by absolutely everyone.
